Carlson's Raiders

Carlson's Raiders was the name given to 2nd Raider Battalion (see USA, 5(f)). It was commanded by Lt-Colonel Evans Carlson of the US Marine Corps who had first suggested that the marines should have commando-type units such as the Raiders. Having observed Chinese guerrillas in action against the Japanese during the China incident, Carlson adopted the Chinese communist phrase gung-ho (‘work together’) as his unit's motto. During the Pacific war he led it on the Makin Island raid and then on a 30-day patrol during the Guadalcanal campaign which became a legend in US Marine Corps history.
