Burns, Lt-General Eedson

Burns, Lt-General Eedson (1897–1985),Canadian Army officer who commanded the 2nd Canadian Division in the UK and the 5th Canadian Armoured Division in the Italian campaign before taking command of the 1st Canadian Corps in March 1944 which in Italy broke through the Hitler Line that May and the Gothic Line in August. However, Burns did not have the confidence of his army commander, Leese, who in July requested he be replaced, which he was eventually, by Foulkes, in November 1944.
