Bruneval raid. British airborne operation mounted on the night of 27/28 February 1942 to obtain details and parts of the German Würzburg
radar set adapted to control night fighters opposing the Allied
strategic air offensive against Germany (see also
Kammhuber Line). After
photographic reconnaissance had revealed a set at Bruneval near Le Havre, details of the area and the defences were obtained from further air reconnaissance and from the French resistance. Diversionary bombing raids were then mounted while paratroops and an RAF radar mechanic were dropped close by. After overcoming opposition, the force took parts of the Würzburg back to the UK by sea for examination. Its capture proved a valuable aid in the
electronic warfare both sides were waging and the raid's success ensured the future of British paratroops.
