British Somaliland, British East African colony, part of Somalia which had been divided between France (see
French Somaliland), Italy (see
Italian Somaliland), and the UK at the end of the nineteenth century. In August 1940, during the
East African campaign, it was occupied by Italian troops after its neighbour, French Somaliland, on whose support its defences relied, joined the
Vichy regime. The colony was retaken in March 1941 when the British Navy landed two Indian battalions at Berbera. Its sole indigenous army unit was the 550-strong Somaliland Camel Corps.
