Blaskowitz, General Johannes (1883–1948),commander of the Eighth German Army which suffered the only German reverse during the
Polish campaign, at
Kutno, he subsequently headed the army of occupation in Poland when he succeeded
Rundstedt as C-in-C East and came into immediate conflict both with the governor-general,
Hans Frank, and with the
SS over the atrocities that were being perpetuated by the
Einsatzgruppen and others. His protests to Hitler, who went into a tirade about his ‘childish ideas’, were ignored and at Frank's request he was removed from his post in May 1940. In October 1940 he was appointed commander of the First German Army garrisoning France and remained in this post until May 1944 when he was appointed to command Army Group G which opposed the Allied
French Riviera landings that August. He was replaced in September but in January 1945 he took over from
General Student as commander of Army Group H in the Netherlands, his post being renamed C-in-C Festung Holland (Fortress Holland) that April. He committed suicide before appearing at the
Nuremberg trials to face lesser war crimes.
