Bernhard, Prince

Bernhard, Prince (1911–2004),German-born husband of Princess Juliana, the heir to the Dutch throne, who renounced his German citizenship on his marriage in 1937. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands in May 1940 (see FALL GELB) he escaped to the UK where he trained as a pilot. In November 1940 Juliana's mother, Queen Wilhelmina, appointed him liaison officer between the British and Dutch forces and he also reorganized Dutch intelligence in London. He flew three missions over France and Italy with the US Army Air Forces and also took part in a number of fighter sorties. In September 1944 Eisenhower appointed him C-in-C of all Dutch forces, including the various resistance factions which he did much to unite and encourage from his Brussels HQ during the last months of the war.
