Bermuda conference

Bermuda conference, held behind closed doors between British and US officials in April 1943 to discuss the plight of European Jewry, in particular the fate of 70,000 Romanian Jews who had been deported to Transnistria, and the refugee problem posed by the Final Solution. It began on the same day as the Germans started their final assault on the Warsaw ghetto (see Warsaw risings) and lasted nine days. Proposals submitted by the Jewish Agency executive for an approach to Hitler to alleviate the plight of Jews in occupied Europe, and to abandon temporarily British policies limiting Jewish immigration into Palestine, were among the ideas rejected as being impracticable. The only concrete achievement of the conference was the opening of a refugee centre in North Africa. Its final report was not made public at the time ‘for fear of aiding the Axis and harming refugees’.
