Bardia, battle of

Bardia, battle of, fought in December 1940– January 1941 between General Annibale Bergonzoli's 23rd Italian Corps, holding the fortified Libyan town of Bardia, and O'Connor's 13th British Corps. British intelligence had grossly underestimated both Bergonzoli's strength and the determination of his men, but on 4 January 1941 two brigades of 6th Australian Division, in action for the first time, captured the town and took 40,000 prisoners-of-war.
