Bandera, Stepan

Bandera, Stepan (1909–59),leader of a breakaway faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (see Ukraine). His declaration of an independent Ukrainian state on 30 June 1941, eight days after the start of the German–Soviet War (see also BARBAROSSA), was ignored by the Germans who imprisoned him and his prime minister, Stetsko, in Sachsenhausen. He was released in September 1944 to intensify Ukrainian resistance against the advancing Red Army. His death in Munich from poison was the work of Soviet agents.
