Baedeker raids

Baedeker raids, tip-and-run Luftwaffe bombing raids which, from April to June 1942, were mounted against the English cities of Bath, Canterbury, Exeter, Norwich, and York. They resulted in 1,637 civilians being killed and 1,760 injured.

The raids, undertaken in retaliation for the RAF's area bombing of the German civilian populations of Lübeck and Rostock, were so called because a German foreign office official announced the campaign at a press conference by saying that the Luftwaffe would bomb every English building marked with three stars in the Baedeker guidebook.
