Ba Maw (1893–1977),British-educated lawyer who, as leader of the Sinyetha (People's) Party, served as Burma's first prime minister from April 1937 to March 1939. A fervent nationalist, he was in regular contact with the Japanese and was imprisoned for sedition by the British in August 1940. In August 1942 the Japanese appointed him to head Burma's civil administration. He adopted the title Ahnashin (‘lord of authority’), and the Sinyetha Party then forged an alliance with the Thakins to support him. After Japan granted Burma its independence in August 1943, he chose the title Adipati (‘chief’) and led an authoritarian, one-party state. He escaped to Japan in 1945 and was gaoled there briefly by the Allies, but returned to Burma in July 1946. He then formed a new political party but was imprisoned twice more by the Burmese before he died. See also anti-imperialism.
