Atlantic Wall

Atlantic Wall, Hitler's name for the line of fortifications which stretched, though not continuously, for 2,685 km. (1,670 mi.) along the coastline from the Netherlands to Spain to prevent an Allied landing. The Todt Organization, which built it, began work in the summer of 1942. It became a cornerstone of Hitler's Festung Europa (Fortress Europe). But though the early fortifications proved their worth during the Dieppe raid of August 1942—and its gun batteries, bunkers, observation towers, and radar posts eventually absorbed 17.3 million cubic tons of concrete—it failed to prevent the Normandy landings of June 1944 (see OVERLORD). Much of it still stands.
