Atlantic Ferry Organization

Atlantic Ferry Organization (ATFERO). Allied transatlantic air ferry service which, from November 1940 to August 1941, flew US-built combat aircraft to the UK, after which delivery became the responsibility of RAF Ferry Command. It was initiated by Beaverbrook and organized by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Because of the Neutrality Acts the first two aircraft were delivered close to the Canadian border, and a team of horses then hauled them into Canada, but the Acts' stringent regulations were soon relaxed. The aircraft were flown by British, Canadian, and US pilots, mostly civilians, and from May to August 1941 US service pilots delivered them to Montreal, the US government having created the Air Corps Ferrying Command (see Air Transport Command) for this purpose. During the war about 10,000 US aircraft were delivered to the UK. See also Takoradi air route.
