ASDIC, acronym of Allied Submarine Detection Investigation Committee, an Anglo-French organization which in 1917 began evolving a system of detecting submerged submarines by sound: it emitted a pulse which was then picked up when it rebounded from a submarine's hull. By 1938 it had been fully developed by the British who, for a time, regarded it as the answer to submarine warfare. But though it was, within limits, effective, it could only gauge the distance and direction of the target which was why a pattern of depth charges had to be set to explode at different depths (see anti-submarine weapons). The US Navy developed a similar system which it called Sonar and in 1943 the Royal Navy adopted the same name.
