“Yankee Doodle,” popular song of the patriot troops during the Revolutionary War, the origin of whose title, words, and tune is unknown. It has often been attributed to a Dr. Shuckburg, a British army surgeon, who supposedly wrote the words in derision of the motley American army. The earliest manuscript version is dated 1775, and the earliest known printing was in a Scottish collection c. 1778. In Tyler's The Contrast (1787), Jonathan says he knows only 190 of its verses, although “our Tabitha at home can sing it all.”
