Wolfe, Tom (Thomas Kennerly Wolfe, Jr.) (1931–), Virginia‐born journalist, known for his treatment of contemporary American culture from its popular heroes to its alternative life‐styles, a jet‐set sociology written in a baroque pop style. His collections of articles include The Kandy‐Kolored Tangerine‐Flake Streamline Baby (1965), The Pump House Gang (1968), and Radical Chic and Mau‐Mauing the Flak Catchers (1970). Other books include The Electric Kool‐Aid Acid Test (1968), partly about Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters; The New Journalism (1973); The Painted Word (1975), commentary on the current art world's pretensions; Mauve Gloves and Madmen (1976), stories, essays, and sketches; The Right Stuff (1979), about U.S. astronauts, “gods for a day”; and From Bauhaus to Our House (1981), a satirical view of contemporary U.S. architecture. In Our Time (1980) collects his drawings, and The Purple Decades (1982) collects 20 essays from previous books. The Bonfire of the Vanities (1987), his first novel, presents a successful young New York financial trader in trouble.
