Winning of the West, The

Winning of the West, The, historical study by Theodore Roosevelt, published in four volumes (1889–96). It deals with the settlement of the Northwest Territory following the Revolutionary War, and specifically with the events leading up to the Ordinance of 1787, which established the conditions of expansion and the development of political and social institutions in the U.S. beyond the Ohio. The work used original sources and influenced later histories in reconsidering the significance of this period, but is generally considered to follow Parkman in its romantic portrayal of heroic events and emphasis on literary qualities rather than scholarship.
