Williams, John (1664–1729), after graduation from Harvard (1683) became pastor of the Congregational church at Deerfield in western Massachusetts, where during the French and Indian Wars he and his entire family were captured by Indians. His account of his two‐year captivity and his resistance to Jesuit attempts to convert him, written with Cotton Mather, was published as
The Redeemed Captive, Returning to Zion (1707).
