Joan Didion, published in 1979. Opening with a partly autobiographical section that also provides background on persons and situations about which she wrote in the 1960s, it continues with a section of vignettes on California life, followed by one on women, and another on places the author has visited, concluding with
On the Morning After the Sixties. The title derives from an album of recordings by the Beatles; the title of one song,
Helter Skelter, was written in blood by the murderers in the La Bianca‐Tate massacre, a subject symbolically cited in the book.
