Waters, Frank

Waters, Frank (1902–95), born in Colorado, began his literary career with Wild Earth's Nobility (1935), about a young man's career in the area's mining development to 1902; Below Grass Roots (1937), a sequel in the man's personal life and his search for gold; Dust Within the Rock (1940), the third novel to complete a trilogy; People of the Valley (1941), about people of the Southwest cultures; The Man Who Killed the Deer (1942), a tale of Pueblo Indians and of a young man fighting their and his own rituals; The Yogi of Cockroach Court (1947), about life in a Mexican border town; Pike's Peak: A Family Saga (1971); and Flight from Fiesta (1986), a tale of friction and friendship between a Pueblo Indian and a young Anglo tourist. He wrote as many works of nonfiction as novels, including one on The Colorado (1946), a studious Book of the Hopi (1964), a study of Mexico Mystique (1975), and a book of essays both autobiographical and mystical in Mountain Dialogues (1982).
