Washington Square Players, The, New York City little theater, founded in 1915, initially to encourage native talents and American themes. Its members included Zoç Akins, Zona Gale, and Philip Moeller as playwrights, Katharine Cornell as an actress, and Robert Edmond Jones as a stage designer. U.S. entry into World War I helped to end the enterprise in 1918, and the following year many of its participants founded the Theatre Guild.
