Virginia, novel by
Ellen Glasgow, published in 1913.
Virginia Dinwiddie, reared during the 1880s in the state for which she is named and in keeping with its ideals of gentility and propriety, subordinates herself to her husband, Oliver Treadwell, a poor, aspiring, and egocentric playwright, and their three children. Finally he becomes a successful dramatist with plays produced in New York, but by this time Virginia is middle‐aged, worn, and limited in interests to her domestic obligations, so he deserts her for Margaret Oldcastle, the star of his plays. Virginia is left without a purpose in life except the devotion to her son Harry, who loves her, for she has little in common with her independent, feminist, and aggressive daughters.
