Tucker, Nathaniel Beverley (1784–1851), son of St. George Tucker, was a professor of law at William and Mary and author of several works on political economy and law, which show him to be a highly reactionary Virginia aristocrat. He is best known for his novels:
George Balcombe (1836), a realistic picture of contemporary Virginia and Missouri; and
The Partisan Leader (1836), a romance telling of events supposed to take place in 1849, which was intended to sway the election of 1836 against Van Buren, but whose political philosophy made it more than a campaign document and caused it to be reissued as propaganda during the Civil War. He is sometimes known as Beverley Tucker, and used the pseudonym Edward William Sidney.
