Townsend, George Alfred

Townsend, George Alfred (1841–1914), Delaware‐born journalist, became known for his vivid Civil War dispatches, collected in Campaigns of a Non‐Combatant (1866). After the war he became one of the first syndicated correspondents, writing for some one hundred newspapers under the pseudonym Gath. Although he wrote many books based upon his journalism, biographies of Garibaldi (1867) and Lincoln (1867), Poems (1870), plays, and historical romances, he is best remembered for his Tales of the Chesapeake (1880), a collection of local‐color stories, and The Entailed Hat (1884), a novel about the kidnapping of free blacks before the Civil War.
