Toklas, Alice B(abette)

Toklas, Alice B[abette] (1877–1967), San Francisco‐born friend, constant companion, and secretary of Gertrude Stein from 1907 on. Gertrude Stein made her the ostensible author of The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), which she declared was written “as simply as Defoe did the autobiography of Robinson Crusoe,” although it was her own life story. Miss Toklas finally spoke out herself in a brief memoir, What Is Remembered (1963), and she also wrote The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book (1954), recipes and reminiscences; and Aromas and Flavors of Past and Present (1958), a French cookbook. Staying On Alone (1973) collects letters written after Gertrude Stein's death.
