Story, Joseph (1779–1845),Massachusetts jurist, was active in state politics and was a Democratic Republican congressman (1808–9) before he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court (1811). He held this position for the rest of his life, made many important decisions on admiralty and prize law, and virtually established American patent law. After 1829 he held a professorship of law at Harvard, where he was distinguished both as a teacher and as a pioneer in modern law‐school training. In addition to other writings, his series of
Commentaries (1832–45) is particularly important for
On the Constitution (1833) and
Equity Jurisprudence (2 vols., 1836).
