Stars and Stripes, The (1918–19),official newspaper of the American Expeditionary Force, printed in France, included among its editorial staff F.P. Adams, John T. Winterich, and Alexander Woollcott. It was continued as an independent paper in the U.S. (1919–26). Woollcott collected his tales of the AEF from it in
The Command Is Forward (1919), and Winterich's informal history of the paper
Squads Write! (1931) includes some of its prose, verse, and cartoons.
A paper of the same name was founded in 1942 as the newspaper of the U.S. armed forces during World War II. It was issued in most of the theaters in which U.S. troops were stationed, and continued after the war, in smaller size, to serve occupation forces. The largest editions were those for the European theater, published in Paris, Rome, and other cities (1942–45).
