Sheean, [James] Vincent (1899–1975),born in Illinois, attended the University of Chicago, and became a European correspondent for the
Chicago Tribune (1922–25), and later for news syndicates, reporting the Fascist march on Rome, the wars on the Rif tribes, and other events of the postwar decade. In
Personal History (1935) he records the development of his mind through these experiences.
Between the Thunder and the Sun (1943) and
This House Against This House (1946) contain further personal history. His other books include the novels
The Anatomy of Virtue (1927),
Gog and Magog (1930),
The Tide (1933),
Sanfelice (1936),
A Day of Battle (1938),
Bird of the Wilderness (1941),
A Certain Rich Man (1947), and
Beware of Caesar (1965). His biographies include
Lead, Kindly Light (1949), about Gandhi;
The Indigo Bunting (1951), a memoir of Edna St. Vincent Millay:
Oscar Hammerstein I (1956);
Orpheus at Eighty (1958), a life of Verdi;
Nehru: The Years of Power (1959);
Dorothy and Red (1963), a memoir of the married life of his friends Dorothy Thompson and Sinclair Lewis; and
Faisal: The King and His Kingdom (1975).
