Schmitt, Gladys

Schmitt, Gladys (1909–72),Pennsylvania author, long on the faculty of Carnegie‐Mellon University, was the author of 11 novels, including The Gates of Aulis (1942), about a German family in America and their concern for the social good; Alexandra (1947); Confessors of the Name (1952); The Persistent Image (1955); and A Small Fire (1957). David the King (1946) and Rembrandt (1961) are historical novels. Electra (1964) is a novel based on the Greek theme. The Godforgotten (1974) is an allegorical novel about an isolated 11th‐century Benedictine community.
