Prince of Parthia, The

Prince of Parthia, The, romantic blank‐verse tragedy by
Thomas Godfrey, written in 1759 and published in 1765. If it was actually produced in 1767, it was the first play by an American to be produced professionally. Set at the beginning of the Christian era, it has a plot derived form Elizabethan dramatic conventions and is a patchwork of passages imitating the work of Shakespeare, Addison, Marlowe, Rowe, Dryden, Beaumont, and Ambrose Philips.
