Potiphar Papers, The, seven satirical sketches of New York society by
G.W. Curtis, published in 1853. Portraying the hypocrisies and foibles of “our best society,” the author considers this class to be composed of three types: first, the rich; second, those who belong to “the good old families”; and, third, “a swarm of youths who can dance dexterously, and who are invited for that purpose” to stupid, absurd parties. Beneath the surface of comedy there is an undercurrent of serious thought, for Curtis perceived dangerous tendencies in this society. The book is notable for its depiction of such characters as the socially ambitious Mrs. Potiphar, her philosophically resigned husband, and the tenderly sympathetic Reverend Cream Cheese.
