Ponteach, or, the Savages of America

Ponteach, or, the Savages of America, blank‐verse play by Robert Rogers, published in 1766. It was the first tragedy to be written about the Indians. Rogers had served in the expedition to crush Pontiac's Rebellion, but in the play he extols the noble Indian warrior and depicts the baseness of the English methods. The facts are still regarded as authentic, aside from the idealization of the chief, and Parkman used the play as a principal source of his History of the Conspiracy of Pontiac.
