Pennsylvania Packet or General Advertiser (1771–1839), Philadelphia newspaper, founded by John Dunlop. During 1776, Paine replied in its columns, under the signature Forester, to the attacks of William Smith in
The Pennsylvania Gazette. Formerly a triweekly, in 1784 the paper became a daily. It passed into the hands of Dunlop's partners (1795) and was called
Claypoole's American Daily Advertiser. It was this paper that first published Washington's
Farewell Address. In 1800 it was sold to Zachariah Poulson (1761–1844), who gave it his name, and in 1839 it was absorbed by the
Philadelphia North American, which was published until 1925.
