Patten, William Gilbert (1866–1945), under the pseudonym Burt L. Standish wrote dime novels and several series of juvenile stories about college life and amateur sports. The best‐known series deals with Frank Merriwell, a wholesome college athlete. The series began in 1896, included more than 200 novels, and sold over 25,000,000 copies. After a long interval
Mr. Frank Merriwell (1941) appeared, presenting a mature hero facing contemporary problems, and Patten's autobiography was published as
Frank Merriwell's “Father” (1964).
