Once I Pass'd Through a Populous City, poem by Whitman, published in the “Children of Adam” section of Leaves of Grass (1860). Although the poem in its original manuscript referred to a man, and Whitman denied that the poem was autobiographical, its declaration that “of all that city I remember only a woman” has led biographers to contend that it refers to a love affair in New Orleans in 1848 which substantially altered Whitman's character.
