Nock, Albert Jay

Nock, Albert Jay (1870–1945), iconoclastic author, by turns a minister, a muckraking journalist, a professor, and an independent commentator on social issues and ideas. His diverse writings appeared under his own name and pseudonyms, independently and in various collaborations. His books include How Diplomats Make War (1915); The Myth of a Guilty Nation (1922); Jefferson (1926), a “study in conduct and character”; The Theory of Education in the United States (1932); A Journal of These Days (1934), a personal record, exhibiting the author's wit and irony as well as his prejudices; Our Enemy, the State (1935), expressing his extreme individualism; Henry George: An Essay (1939); Meditations in Wall Street (1940), aphorisms; and Memoirs of a Superfluous Man (1943), autobiography. He edited works of Artemus Ward (1924) and Rabelais (1931).
