Murat, Achille (1801–47),son of Joachim Murat, king of Naples (1808–15), and Caroline, a sister of Napoleon I, emigrated to the U.S. in 1823, where he settled in Florida and married an American woman. Although he spent a short while on the Continent, attempting to advance the Bonapartist cause, he lived most of the latter part of his life in the U.S. His works include Lettres sur les états‐Unis (1830), a republican manifesto to Europe; Esquisse morale et politique des états‐Unis (1832), a philosophic account of American society (English translations 1833, 1849); and Exposition des principes du gouvernement républican, tel qu'il a été perfectionné en Amérique (1833).
