Millerites

Millerites, religious sect more properly called Second Adventists. These followers of the New York farmer William Miller (1782–1849) believed in the physical second advent of Christ in 1843. After the Day of Judgment failed to arrive that year, the date was set for October 23, 1844. Even after the second disappointment many followers remained faithful, continuing to anticipate a second coming. Another group, the Seventh‐Day Adventists, holding to a similar belief, adopted Saturday as the sabbath. In 1990 this body had 700,000 members, and other Adventist sects some 31,000. Edward Eggleston's The End of the World and the works of Jane M. Parker are among books dealing with Millerites.
