Merton, Thomas (1915–69),religious writer, an American born in France, reared there, in England, and the U.S., while at Columbia University was converted to Roman Catholicism. In 1941 he became a Trappist at a Kentucky monastery and was later ordained as Father M. Louis. His books include
The Seven Storey Mountain (1948), autobiography;
The Waters of Siloe (1949), on the Trappists;
Seeds of Contemplation (1949), on the spiritual life;
The Ascent to Truth (1951),
The Sign of Jonas (1953),
No Man Is an Island (1955),
The Silent Life (1957),
Silence in Heaven (1957),
Thoughts in Solitude (1958),
The New Man (1962),
Life and Holiness (1963),
Seeds of Destruction (1964),
Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander (1966), and
Mystics and Zen Masters (1969), meditations and essays. His poetry includes
A Man in the Divided Sea (1946),
Figures for an Apocalypse (1947), and
Cables to the Ace (1968). Other publications include a
Secular Journal (1959) and his correspondence with Van Wyck Brooks (1970).
