Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, nonfictional work by James Agee with photographs by Walker Evans, published in 1941. Commissioned (1936) by Fortune magazine, it was rejected because the collaborators could not treat their subject in a conventional journalistic fashion. Instead they converted and expanded their assignment on cotton tenantry in the U.S. to reveal the ways of life and the personalities of the members of three families in warm, personal terms. Almost 50 years later a sequel was created by Dale Maharidge⧫ and Michael Williamson.
