Lawrence, D[avid] H[erbert] (1885–1930), English novelist, poet, and critic, in 1915 began to consider U.S. sites for an ideal community, “Rananim.” Interest in American culture led to his trenchant Studies in Classic American Literature (1923), essays on The Spirit of Place and eight authors from Franklin to Whitman. Early versions of the essays have been collected in The Symbolic Meaning (1962). In 1922 Lawrence and his wife Frieda moved to a ranch near Taos, N.M., and lived there until 1925, except for a long visit to Mexico. At Taos he finished Kangaroo (1923), wrote another novel, The Plumed Serpent (1926), the novelettes St. Mawr and The Princess (1925), The Woman Who Rode Away (1928) and other stories with American settings, and most of the essays in Mornings in Mexico (1927) and Reflections on the Death of a Porcupine (1934). Views of Lawrence in New Mexico are to be found in many memoirs, including Lorenzo in Taos (1932) by Mabel Dodge Luhan and Journey with Genius (1951) by Witter Bynner.
