Grund, Francis Joseph (1798–1863), emigrated to Boston from his native Austria about 1827 and began writing school texts before publishing
The Americans in Their Moral, Social and Political Relations (1837), a work far more laudatory than his
Aristocracy in America (2 vols., 1839), ostensibly by a German nobleman. As an American he wrote campaign biographies of several presidential candidates to appeal to German‐speaking voters, and was rewarded by consular posts. He published and edited a Philadelphia journal,
Age (1842–63).
