Griffith, D(avid Lewelyn) W(ark)

Griffith, D[avid Lewelyn] W[ark] (1875–1948), motion‐picture producer and director, who as a pioneer in the medium introduced such devices as the close‐up and fade‐out. His picture The Birth of a Nation (1915), based on Thomas Dixon's The Clansman, was the first large screen spectacle in the genre. His other productions include Intolerance (1916), Hearts of the World (1918), Broken Blossoms (1919), and Orphans of the Storm (1921).
