Green, Anne

Green, Anne (1899–1979), Georgia‐born author, like her brother Julien (originally Julian) Green lived most of her life in France, which is the background of her novels. These include The Selbys (1930), Reader, I Married Him (1931), Marietta (1932), Fools Rush In (1934), That Fellow Perceval (1935), 16 Rue Cortambert (1937), and Just Before Dawn (1943), mostly light, satirical stories of expatriates from the Southern states. A Marriage of Convenience (1933) is a humorous treatment of changing French standards; Paris (1938) is a character study of a French business woman; The Silent Duchess (1939) is set in 18th‐century France; The Delamer Curse (1940) tells of the exorcising of a curse laid on a Franco‐American family; The Lady in the Mask (1942) is a historical novel of Renaissance Milan; and The Old Lady (1947) brings a French woman to the U.S. She also published fiction in French, e.g. Le Goret (1954), stories, and La Porte des Songes (1969), With Much Love (1948) recalls her childhood in France.
