Down East

Down East, popular name for Maine, or for other districts on the New England and Nova Scotia coast. The Down East character, with his shrewd Yankee wit, was well defined in the humor of American almanacs and newspapers prior to the creation of Seba Smith's Jack Downing (1830), who was followed by a great many similar characters, including Sam Slick, Hosea Biglow, Frances Miriam Whitcher's Widow Spriggins and Widow Bedott, and Shillaber's Mrs. Partington.
