Dobie, J(ames) Frank

Dobie, J[ames] Frank (1888–1964),Texas educator and author, whose books on Southwestern history and folklore include A Vaquero of the Brush Country (1929), based on the reminiscences of the cattleman John Young; Coronado's Children (1931), tales of lost mines and buried treasures; On the Open Range (1931); Tongues of the Monte (1935), about northern Mexico; Tales of the Mustangs (1936); Apache Gold and Yaqui Silver (1939); The Longhorns (1941); Guide to Life and Literature of the Southwest (1943); The Voice of the Coyote (1949); Tales of Old‐Time Texas (1955); and Cow People (1964). He was a professor of English at the University of Texas (1933–47) and his experiences as a visiting professor at Cambridge during World War II are described in A Texan in England (1945).
