Colwin, Laurie E.

Colwin, Laurie E. (1944–92), novelist and short story writer. Born in Manhattan, she grew up on Long Island, in Chicago and Philadelphia, and attended Bard College and Columbia University. Her material was the mores of middle and upper‐class New Yorkers; her love stories usually had happy endings, both in and outside of marriage. Her novels are Shine On, Bright and Dangerous Object (1975), Happy All the Time (1978), Family Happiness (1982), Goodbye Without Leaving (1990), and the posthumously published A Big Storm Knocked It Over (1993), in which the idealization of friendship supplants that of happy family life. Her short story collections are Passion and Affect (1974), The Lone Pilgrim (1981), and Another Marvelous Thing (1986).
