Chateaubriand, François René

Chateaubriand, François René, Vicomte de (1768–1848), French romantic author, made one visit to the U.S. (July 10–Dec. 10, 1791), which included a trip from Baltimore to Niagara Falls and a brief residence with an Indian tribe. Voyage en Amérique (1827) describes the trip with many fictional embellishments. His works with American settings include Atala, René, and Les Natchez.
