Cabet, Étienne

Cabet, Étienne (1788–1856), French Communist, whose Utopian romance Voyage et Aventures de Lord William Carisdall en Icarie (1840) won him many followers. With more than 500 of these Icarians, he came to the U.S. to establish socialized communities. The most important were at Cheltenham, Mo.; Cloverdale, Cal.; and Corning, Iowa.
