Bucke, Richard Maurice (1837–1902), English‐born friend of Whitman, reared in Can‐ada, and practiced there and in the U.S. as a doctor specializing in psychiatric disturbances. His uncritically enthusiastic and mystical writings on Whitman include
Walt Whitman (1883) and
Walt Whitman, Man and Poet (1897). His concern with the poet's mysticism led him to write
Cosmic Consciousness (1901). As a literary executor of Whitman he joined Horace Traubel⧫ and Thomas B. Harned in editing
The Complete Writings (1902) and collecting critical essays and statements by followers published in
In Re Walt Whitman (1893).
